Packet Radio

On this page i will explain some about Packet Radio.
For this you need a computer,a modem and a transmitter.
It looks in some ways like Internet, but the differences are that Packet goes by radio and much slower as well.
It's only used for text messages and downloading little files.
This is because of the low speed, that is between 300 Baud on the lower frequenties,
and 4800 Baud on the higher ones.
This can be done between two stations near by eithother,or by using a BBS station.
BBS stations are connected by a network of other's and by this way,the messages will go throw the whole network.
This takes some time, because the BBS has to upload all of this from the others.

I was active on packet for some years. My call is NL0NWB.
We have two kinds of calls that are kinda registrated.
We have the NL and the CB calls.
The packet that i used was on the CB-radio bands,27 Mhz.
We use there 1200 Baud speed.

My equipment was:

Transmitter: President Lincoln
Antenna: Pan Sigma 4000
Modem: TNC2NL or Baycom
Computer: 486dx4 100Mhz.
Packet programms used: TSThost 1.43b,SP,GP,Jnos,PCK,WINPACK,NPG,DP and some more.

The location was Nieuw Buinen, north east Holland.
The QTH locator jo32lx.

See here a example of a BBS.This comes from the NL3ONB from Holland.

From above you can see some information again.
The "path" shows where the message was written down and where it went, before it came at this BBS.
I was connected with the NL3ONB,so the person wrote the message at the last BBS.
The person who did write this message was the NL2STK at the NL3STK BBS.
At the subject you see a RE2,the RE stands for a reaction on the main message,RE2 means that it's the
second reply,so a reply to a reply.

[ 16/12/1999 09:25z #:0045 @:NL2STK QRA:JO32LX ] Header v1.20 by G7VFD.

This line above comes from the NL2STK and it shows info about the date and time,
when he did write this message

This was a example of a text-based message.

Here you see a example what you see in a BBS when it contains a file:

629934³BF D³ 6032³FOTO  @NLD   ³NL0STF³17-Dec³KERMIT.P07 <+AUTO7P

This is a kind of photo send on packet. But it's not complete.
It is packed and splitted in parts by the programm called "auto7pl".
If p09 whould be the last file, then there should be p01 till p09.
But because it goes by radio, read air, sometimes some files get lost.
Some BBS station make use now of the internet for up- and downloading of their messages.
They do it by email of telnet.
